Breakaway Cannon Casting Aid – Improve Casting Distance & Accuracy
For both distance and accuracy, the most important part of any cast is holding the line securely until the power stroke is complete. Doing this by hand is difficult, uncomfortable, and often painful — especially during long sessions. The solution is mechanical, simple, and proven.
The Breakaway Cannon Casting Aid is the original and most popular casting trigger, designed by Mr Alfred Priestley, to take the strain out of casting while dramatically improving performance.
Mounted underneath the rod, in line with the rings and positioned as close as possible over the reel spool, the Cannon provides a consistent and reliable line release. Because reels and reel seats vary, the Cannon should be temporarily fixed to the rod using insulating tape until the ideal position is found.
For anglers fishing venues where large fish are common, always ensure the clutch is tightened before casting. Winding the leader three turns around the Cannon allows confident casting even with a lighter clutch setting.
The Breakaway Cannon is ideal for:
- Improving casting distance
- Increasing casting accuracy
- Reducing finger strain and injury
- Anglers struggling to hold and release the line cleanly
A Real Angler’s Story (USA)
We received the following email from a customer in the USA and loved it so much we had to share it.
An angler who had lost much of the dexterity in his hands following a serious accident struggled to cast using conventional methods. After fitting a Breakaway Cannon to his rod, he was able to cast further than he had in years — independently and confidently.
He described the Cannon as turning him from “handicapped to handicap-able” and said it allowed him to regain something he thought he had lost forever.
Sometimes fishing tackle does more than help you catch fish — it helps you get back to fishing.

I have seen various mixed reviews about this or similar products, but I thought I’d give it a go. When casting any reasonable distance, I always use a 60lb shock leader tied to my usual 15lb mainline. The knot, no matter how carefully tied is always substantial enough to nick your finger if you happen to have it in contact with the line as it leaves the spool.
The Cannon is such a simple device that eliminates any contact with the wretched leader knot! Mounting it on your rod is easy (using some electrical tape to help secure it is recommended) and using it is easier still. All you’re doing is using the device to replace the finger you use to hold the line as you wind up the cast. The casting action remains the same, but you have more confidence to put a little more ‘oomph’ into it. I’ve read some peoples reports that it takes a little getting used to but I found it very natural from the very first go. My distance has improved and my fingers are cut-free.
One note is that setting your line into the device can be be a bit of a faff but after a bit of practice becomes second nature.
From my own personal experience I find this to be a great little device and one I’d recommend.

I was having a few casting malfunctions (inexperienced) particularly if my hands were wet or slippery from baiting hooks. This gadget solved the problems completely allowing much more consistent casts – a brilliant piece of kit. You need to read the instructions and tighten up the clutch.
